US Silver Eagle Coins

Want to buy American Silver Eagle coins? Read on for facts and info on the official silver bullion coin of the United States and find out about the value of each American Silver Eagle coin…

The official silver bullion coin of the United States is known as the American Silver Eagle. The first issue of this particular coin was minted and released on 24 November 1986. The United States mint was at the head of the production of these coins.

Historically the American Silver Eagle coins have been struck in the one troy ounce denomination only. They have a face value of one dollar although they were a lot more in terms of their silver content. They are also guaranteed by the government with respect to the fact that they contain 99.9% pure silver. The United States Congress also certifies its weight along with its content.

These coins are popularly used for a number of different purposes. Many people use the American Silver Eagle coins for the purpose of funding their individual retirement account. On the other hand coin collectors have the opportunity to add this specially produced proof version to their collection.

Over the course of history the American Silver Eagle coin has been minted at three separate locations. The first mintage that issued the official Silver bullion was situated in Philadelphia. Coins that have been minted at this facility bear the mint mark of “P”. The San Francisco mint is credited for issuing the early batches of proof versions of the American Silver Eagle bearing the mint mark of “S”. The most recent proofs have been issued from the West Point mint in New York and bear the mint mark of “W”.

American Silver Eagle Design

The obverse side of the American Eagle coin features the classic walking liberty design that was developed by Adolph A. Weinman. The same way  the design used for the half dollar coin was minted in the United States between 1916 to 1947. The walking liberty design was considered to be an iconic image that had become a favorite for the public. With the American Silver Eagle coins this historic blizzard was revived and introduced to the public once again. The reverse side of the American Silver Eagle had the image of the heraldic eagle which was designed by John Mercanti.

American Silver Eagle Value

Over the years the prices of American Silver Eagle coins have varied considerably. This is why the potential collector is advised to check with the current standards when looking to acquire these coins. About the two varieties the business strikes were maintained in much larger quantity as compared to proof versions. This is why the proof versions tend to be more expensive than the business variety.

With regards the business strikes the majority of dates are available between value ranges of $20 – $25. Some of the proofs dating back to the early 1990s can sell for well over $100. One of the special American Silver Eagle coins is the 1995 West Point version which was sold in the market for $7000. Another unique connection was released in 2006 which was the anniversary boxed set. The set contained a number of uncirculated as well as proof and previously unreleased reverse proof American Silver Eagle coins.
